The
farmhouse accommodation Tuscany "La
Mezzeria" takes its name from an
ancient contract called "Mezzeria, Mezzadria,
Masseria or Colonia renting" in which
the land owner gave over the land for cultivation
in return for a half-share in the yield.
The rural life of the "mezzadro"
was certainly hard, but it was also rich in
customs and values which have been an important
and constant reference point in the renovation
of the stone country house and the small adjacent
structures.
In creating the three apartments for farmhouse
holiday accommodation Tuscany, I have tried
to maintain the architectural characteristics
typical of the Tuscan farmhouse, respecting
the character of the interiors and using original
materials.
In the garden, or what used to be called the
"aia" (the farmyard area which includes
the house and the adjacent structures), there
is a wood oven - a small stone construction,
with an inner vaulted brick roof which has
remained intact, though a little weatherworn,
and still functional.
The swimming
pool is nearby, although not part of the original
structure of the property, the pool has an
important role in the summer heat. It has
been built near a small stone structure (in
those times, bricks were a luxury) set up
as a hen-house and pig pen, next to the location
of the old compost heap. Today the area is
completely fenced off so guests can relax
in the sun and enjoy the peace of the countryside
in the shade of the huge oak tree nearby.
The property consists of 16 hectares of flat
land with olive groves and vineyards. The
Mediterranean "macchia" beyond the
vineyard encourages periodic forays by wild
animals such as wild boar, roe deer, porcupine,
fox etc.
The only animals on the property are 2 splendid
dogs, an English Setter (Ombra) and a Breton
Spaniel (Diana), which will be very pleased
to meet you.
At the farmhouse accomodatio Tuscany you can
also taste and buy our own olive oil. If you
come in November you can join in the olive
picking: the method is still the same as that
of the "mezzadri".....
